What I Wish I Had Known Before Choosing My Permanent Makeup Course

What I Wish I Had Known Before Choosing My Permanent Makeup Course

A Real Talk Guide for Anyone Thinking of Training

If you’re thinking about training in permanent makeup, first of all — how exciting!
This industry can be incredibly rewarding. It can change lives, restore confidence, give clients back a part of themselves, and give you a career filled with creativity, purpose, and independence.

But I also want to be honest.

I’ve been in this industry a long time now, and I’ve seen it from every angle — the excitement of new beginnings, the nerves of first-ever strokes… and the heartbreak of students who spent thousands only to leave training feeling completely unprepared, unsupported and terrified of touching a client.

So this isn’t a glossy “Do PMU, it’s easy!” post.

This is the blog I wish someone had written for me before I chose my permanent makeup course.

Because here’s the truth no one wants to say out loud…

Not All Permanent Makeup Courses Are the Same

They might look similar when you scroll websites.
They often promise the same things:
• “Learn everything in X days!”
• “Leave fully qualified and confident!”
• “Industry-leading training!”

But behind the marketing, the reality can be incredibly different.

I’ve spoken to so many artists who:
• finished training but never touched a real client after
• left with a certificate but no real confidence
• didn’t understand colour theory, safety or complications
• were basically taught to “copy a pattern” instead of truly learning the craft
• were left alone after training with zero support

And do you know the most common sentence I hear?

“I wish I’d researched more before I booked.”

Understanding Course Variations

Not all courses are created equal. Some offer comprehensive modules covering everything from theory to practice, while others may skim the surface. When you dive into a course, it’s essential to know what you’re getting. Look for programmes that provide detailed breakdowns of what you’ll learn. For instance, a course that includes practical sessions with real models is invaluable. This hands-on experience is crucial. Without it, you’re just scratching the surface. Ask yourself, does the programme match your learning style? Does it offer the specific skills you want to acquire? These are questions you should be asking.

Budget Training Usually Comes at a Bigger Cost

Let’s talk about money honestly.

Cheap training is tempting. I understand that. When you’re starting out, you’re nervous. You might not know if this career is “for you” yet. A lower price feels safer.

But here’s what students don’t always realise at the start:

💔 Budget training often means:
• large classrooms, no individual attention
• rushing through content
• limited practise on live models
• trainers who don’t really have time for you
• very little aftercare support
• “tick box” style learning instead of deep understanding

And the most painful part?

You leave with a certificate… but you don’t leave with confidence.

Which then leads to:
• more training courses
• more money spent
• months (sometimes years) of lost business
• feeling like you “failed” — when actually the course failed you

Your future clients deserve safe, skilled, confident hands.
You deserve training that truly prepares you.

And that brings me to the biggest lesson of all…

Research, Research, Research

Please don’t choose your course because:
✖ it was the cheapest
✖ someone sent you a pretty Instagram ad
✖ it was closest to home
✖ it promised fast results

Instead, do your homework like your career depends on it — because honestly, it does.

Look for:

✔ real-life student results (not just the trainer’s)
✔ evidence of ongoing support
✔ class sizes
✔ whether the trainer still works in clinic
✔ honesty about what it really takes to succeed
✔ training that includes theory, safety, colour, skin, AND technique
✔ someone who cares about your long-term success, not just your payment

Ask questions.
Ask more questions.
And if something feels off… trust that feeling.

Building Confidence Through Quality Training

Confidence in your skills comes from quality training. As you explore options, focus on those that offer robust support and expert guidance to enhance your capabilities.

The Role of Hands-On Practice

Practical experience is the backbone of any good training. It’s one thing to learn the theory, but practice is where the real learning happens. Courses that provide ample opportunities to work with real clients offer a distinct advantage. This practice allows you to understand the nuances of different skin types and client needs. You’ll build muscle memory and learn how to adapt techniques to suit individual cases. It’s a transformative stage in your training, turning knowledge into skill. Without it, even the most detailed theoretical knowledge remains abstract. Hands-on practice turns potential into proficiency.

Why Expert-Led Instruction Matters

Having an expert guide you makes a world of difference. You’re not just learning techniques; you’re absorbing years of industry insight. An experienced instructor offers feedback that can refine your skills faster. They share tips and tricks that only come with years of practice. Moreover, they provide a safety net, helping you avoid common rookie mistakes. This kind of mentorship is invaluable. It’s not just about learning techniques; it’s about adopting a professional mindset. Choose a course where the trainers are not only skilled but passionate about teaching. Their enthusiasm can inspire and motivate you to excel.

Choosing the Right Training Provider

Selecting the right provider is pivotal for your future success. It’s not just about the course; it’s about the support and opportunities that follow.

• good training should challenge you, not rush you

• support after training is just as important as the training itself

Most of all, I wish I’d known that you deserve better than “good enough.”
Your clients deserve better than “hopefully it’s fine.”
And our industry deserves well-trained, ethical, skilled practitioners.
