Booking Your First Cosmetic or Medical Tattooing Consultation: A Practical Guide

Most clients don’t book a consultation overnight.

Usually, they’ve spent weeks — sometimes years — thinking about it first. Saving photos, reading reviews, zooming into other people’s results online, staring at their own face in the mirror wondering if they should finally do something for themselves.

And honestly? That’s completely normal.

Whether somebody is considering permanent makeup, scar camouflage, scalp micropigmentation, laser removal, or restorative tattooing, there’s usually a lot more emotion behind the booking than people realise.

This isn’t just about appearance.
It’s about confidence.

The Consultation Should Never Feel Salesy

One of the biggest things clients say after meeting me is:
“That felt so much more relaxed than I expected.”

Because a consultation should never feel like somebody trying to “sell” you treatments.

You should feel listened to, informed, safe, and able to ask absolutely anything without feeling silly or judged.

For me, the consultation is about understanding the person sitting in front of me first — not just the treatment they’re asking for.

Sometimes somebody wants softer brows because they’ve lost confidence with ageing.
Sometimes it’s restoring shape after hair loss or illness.
Sometimes it’s correcting old work they regret.
Sometimes it’s simply wanting to look less tired every day.

There’s always a story behind why somebody books.

Every Face And Every Treatment Is Different

This is one of the reasons I dislike “copy and paste” permanent makeup.

No two clients have the same skin, face shape, colouring, healing ability, lifestyle, or expectations — so no treatment plan should ever be identical.

During consultations, I look at everything properly:

• your skin
• previous treatments
• medical history
• medications
• lifestyle
• healing ability
• natural colouring
• long-term expectations

Because good results are not just about what looks good on the day — they’re about what will still look good months and years later too.

Sometimes clients come in convinced they want one thing, but after talking properly we realise a softer, more natural option would suit them much better.

That’s where experience really matters.

You Don’t Need To “Know Everything” Before You Book

A lot of clients apologise for asking questions or say things like:
“Sorry, I’ve probably overthought this…”

But honestly, I would much rather somebody ask me loads of questions than sit there confused or anxious because they feel awkward speaking up.

This is your face.
Your skin.
Your confidence.

You deserve to fully understand what you’re booking and why.

And no — you do not need to know all the permanent makeup terminology before coming in either.

That’s my job to guide you through.

Preparation Matters More Than People Think

Before treatment, we’ll go through proper preparation and aftercare together.

Things like active skincare, sun exposure, medications, alcohol, caffeine, hormones, and even stress levels can all affect healing and pigment retention.

Small details really do make a difference to results.

Patch testing may also be needed depending on the treatment. It’s quick, simple, and there to protect you. Your safety will always come before rushing into an appointment.

You Don’t Need To Arrive “Perfect”

This is probably the biggest thing I wish more women understood before consultations:

You do not need to arrive looking polished.

I do not care if you turn up makeup-free, anxious, in gym clothes, straight from work, stressed, overwhelmed, or exhausted.

You don’t need “perfect” skin.
You don’t need to know exactly what you want.
You don’t need to pretend you’re confident.

You just need to show up as you are.

The rest?
We figure out together.
